Stalemate is the second full-band style music project by M.W. Stevens.

After the success of Stevens' trio Stark Madness, many of the acoustic-driven songs from this era were re-imagined as hard rock/alternative tracks to be played in larger scale venues. This studio album is taking these songs to the next level, and given a polished studio treatment.

While most of these songs were already popular and "road tested" before the album's release in 2008, a new song "Stalemate" was added late in the process, and thus became the title track for the album. The tracks on this album deal with the various stages of love-gone-wrong, especially in the final days of a relationship, which mimics a stalemated chess match.

Recorded during a period of sadness, relief, heartbreak, and freedom, this album reflects many of those emotions.

These songs have been re-recorded and modernized for a 2023 discography re-release.
